The portfolio performance view offers a several 'snapshots' of your portfolio performance over time. The top plot shows your portfolio gain (loss) over time, properly adjusted for cash deposits and/or withdrawals. In addition to the portfolio performance, you can optionally display other portfolios, market indicator data and/or individual stocks as a plot overlay. The bottom plot shows total portfolio value (in dollars) over time. You can optionally overlay the values for cash and/or equity in the portfolio over time and add event markers which show the dates for stock buys/sells and cash deposits/withdrawals.

A table is also shown which provides values and gain percentages over the same period:

This table will display gains for the same items which are shown in the performance plot (e.g. the portfolio, market indicators, and any other overlays which you have selected). Note that we restrict the plots to a total of 10 lines (portfolio data + 9 overlays) to assure that the plots stay legible.

Controls for the performance view

The performance view utilizes a simple form to control the plot and table display. A sample form is shown below along with a description of each item in the form:

  • from/to - these date selections determine the starting date for the performance period (from) and the ending date (to). Each date has a number of quick selections available in the pulldown (today, 1 month ago, etc.) as well as a custom selection which will activate the date widget to the right of the pulldown.
  • compare to portfolios - select one or more portfolios to add to the performance plot and table. The 'all' link will add all portfolios to your performance comparison and the 'none' button will remove all portfolios.
  • compare to market indices - check (uncheck) one or more of these boxes to display (hide) a comparison to the market indicator adjacent to the checkbox.
  • compare to stocks - type in symbols to add to the performance plot and table.
  • draw - check events to draw icons on the plot indicating portfolio events: buy/sell stocks, cash in/cash out. Check the cash or equity value options to include the portfolio cash or equity values over time in the portfolio plot.
  • save settings - click on this link to save your settings so that the next time you visit this portfolio, you will see the same view.
  • update view - click on 'update view' to update the performance plot and table without saving the settings.
