portfolio management using autoinvestor strategies
posted by John Siegel on 2/20/08 12:03 PM

The previous post showed how you can track your portfolio over time using stockworm portfolios. Here, we will focus on managing your portfolio using an autoinvestor strategy. Once you have associated an autoinvestor strategy with your portfolio, Stockworm will issue automated buy and sell recommendations based upon the application of this strategy to the current state of your portfolio and will even email these recommendations to you on a daily basis.

If you have not already done so, go ahead and create a new portfolio (see the previous post on portfolio tracking). If you are creating a new portfolio, select the autoinvestor strategy that you would like to use to manage your portfolio. If you have already created your portfolio, go to the ‘autoinvestor‘ view for this portfolio, select your autoinvestor strategy, and click ‘save settings‘:

.

If you want to receive autoinvestor recommendations by email, you must check the ‘daily email‘ box and then save the settings. Otherwise, you will need to visit the autoinvestor page each time that you would like recommendations. The manual provides details on other autoinvestor settings.

Now that you have your portfolio associated with a strategy, all autoinvestor recommendations will automatically be displayed when you visit the ‘autoinvestor‘ portfolio page. In addition, if you have the ‘daily email‘ checked for this portfolio, then your daily recommendations will be delivered to you by email. Here‘s what the autoinvestor page looks like when there are recommendations for your portfolio:

.

As you can see, the recommendations are dividend into recommended positions to close and positions to open. You can quickly update your portfolio with these recommendations by editing the shares, price, and commission for each transaction, as appropriate, and then hitting ‘update portfolio‘. This will enter all of the new transactions and bring your portfolio up-to-date with the strategy recommendations.

Over time, you will continue to receive portfolio recommendations and you will update your Stockworm portfolio if/when you choose to execute these recommendations. Depending on the nature of your strategy, you might see recommended buys and sells as frequently as daily or as infrequently as once each year. On days where your portfolio is up-to-date, the autoinvestor will provide you with a ‘no updates needed‘ message.

If you decide at some point to update your autoinvestor strategy, the changes will be automatically reflected on the portfolio autoinvestor page because the portfolio is directly linked to your saved strategy.
